Osb Bathroom Walls

  1. Hi all
I am putting in a new bathroom which will have stud walls.
There will be a shower over the bath and I intend to tile the walls all around the bath.

I have read about plasterboard getting damp from moisture finding its way around the tiles so have put up some external grade ply around the bath area.

My question is should I do anything special to seal the ply before I tile it. I did run some silicone down the joint between the 2 boards and the board and the wall.

    Thanks for your help.

  2. Don't use plywood, aquapanel/hardibacker 'tile backer' boards are far superior. Only required in the wet areas, plasterboard will suffice for the rest.
Seach this site for 'aquapanel' & it'll answer all your questions
  3. Thanks for reply but I have already got the plywood up.
Is there a problem with using it or what can I do to it.

    Thanks
    KBG

  4. If it's only a small area then i would remove ply & re-cover with tile backer.
Whatever you treat the ply with you will not make it impervious to water. Whereas tile backer boards are impervious to water (not waterproof), as some moisture always gets thruogh the grout then the tile board will not be affected, (grout ain't waterproof what ever it may say on the tin).
  5. 12mm wbp ply is fine mate, used it showers bathrooms for years, never got called back except to do other work, mj what did you use before tile backer stuff came out..........yeah thought so, stick to DIYing...
  6. Thanks for the compliments d88s, you should stick to plywood if you think that's best?
The excuse of i done it this way for years it must be right, is full of ****. The joint between tray/bath & ply evetually goes mildewy & rots. Grout disclouration is far more prevailent when ply is used, It leeches through when the ply gets damp on the grout lines.
i've done showers with ply in the past, but i've moved with the times. I've been using backer boards for several years & it's product that is far superior for the job than ply. people ask for sensible advice on this site & in my proffesional opinion i've suggested what i think is best!
You may have a different view, that's fine. To tell me to stick to diying shows your arrogance & ignorance.

Since the invention of tile backer board, the first of which appeared approximately 15 years ago, building regulations have been updated to consider the new materials.

Technically it doesn't comply with modern building regulations for plywood to be used in shower areas, this is generally one of the regulations that ignored by the "been doing it that way for years builders".

Tile backer boards was designed because of the high failure rate of other materials, plywood, plasterboard whatever.

Necessity is the mother of invention.

  8. Wedi or Marmox backer boards are best

    MR MDF will do
